- Introduction to the course - How the course will be run, teaching methods, course materials and overview of course and the course program.

Handling Techniques - Personal fitness and health, the importance of good housekeeping, planning the lift, kinetic lifting technique, factors that effect good handling and lifting guidelines.

Injuries - Explanation of the basis construction of the spine and spinal segments, details of the degeneration of the spinal discs and the resulting pain, an explanation on muscle and joint damage, Manual Handling Video dealing with some useful case histories, how injuries are caused, the consequences and manual handling techniques.

Confirmation of Knowledge - Delegates undertake a questionnaire based on course content.

Health and Safety - Duty of care of the Company and it's employees, explanation of the terms 'manual handling' and 'ergonomics', statistics related to manual handling injuries within the company and elsewhere. The costs associated with manual handling injuries and types of injuries, description on how things can go wrong and an overview of prevention techniques.

Student Practical work - Delegates to identify their own activities and tasks that could potentially cause a manual handling injury. Each delegate to conduct the process of lifting, moving and placing and putting down a series of containers correctly.

Risk Assessment - Importance of risk assessment, definitions of 'risk' and 'hazard'. Overview of how the company carries out risk assessment with particular reference to manual handling and factors to be considered when assessing manual handling risk.
